According to Wikipedia the earliest known surviving product of Nicéphore Niépce's heliography process, 1825. It is an ink on paper print and reproduces a 17th-century Flemish engraving showing a man leading a horse. View from the Window at Le Gras (1826 or 1827), by Nicéphore Niépce, the earliest known surviving photograph of a real-world scene, made with a camera obscura.
A photograph or photo is an image created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface, usually photographic film or an electronic medium such as a CCD or a CMOS chip. Most photographs are created using a camera, which uses a lens to focus the scene's visible wavelengths of light into a reproduction of what the human eye would see. The process and practice of creating photographs is called photography.
The word “photograph" was coined in 1839 by Sir John Herschel and is based on the Greek φῶς (phos), meaning “light", and γραφή (graphê), meaning “drawing, writing", together meaning “drawing with light"
The first photographs could take hours even days of exposure in order to get an image. The process was quite lengthy and detailed. Today we even have cameras on our cell phones and think nothing of popping a photograph as we go for walks, attend an event, go shopping or even as we drive. Technology has come a long way.
Lights, Camera, Picture
When you look at old photographs a lot of the people in them are not smiling and look so somber. The had to be still for several minutes in order for the correct exposure and it is hard to hold the same position for that long. A somber look is much easier to hold than a smile in the exact same position for several minutes.
Photography is not just pointing a camera and shooting the picture. You have to look at every aspect to assure that you get the best quality possible. Camera angle, lighting, background, depth of field are just a few of the things that are all very important to the finished product.
There are many different types of photographs. Polaroids took the world by storm years ago because people loved the fact that you could see the image in just a few minutes. It was unheard of when it first came out. You would take the photograph and wait so many minutes or seconds depending on your film and camera. After the set time you would peel back the protective sheet and see the finished product. It was amazing and revolutionised the photograph industry. The quality was not great but it was still a lot of fun and nice to have a quick result.
Film photography is a longer process but the results not only last longer but also have a much higher quality. With film photography the image has to go through a process of being developed. Film is placed on a reel that has space between each layer. That is then put into a canister and chemicals are added and shook up so that it fully coats the film and is evenly distributed. After the correct processing time it is then put through another chemical process and rinsed. Once dry it can then be developed onto photographic paper. The process has to be done in a “dark room".
This is not a terribly lengthy process but it can be tricky. If light gets to the film before it is processed it is ruined. The chemicals have to be exact and correct or the film will be destroyed. Many times film gets ruined for various reasons. Digital photography is a much simpler process and you can see the results instantly. It still has to be processed but it is more readily available to view in a quicker time span.
360 photography is a process where several pictures are taken in a set pattern and then stitched together to make the final picture. 360 Panorama, a photograph spanning a full circle. If done correctly a 360 photograph or panorama is interactive and you can actually zoom in and out of the picture to show great detail.
360 photography is the latest development in photography. It is setting new parameters for what we are capable of doing. Imagine being able to virtually walk through a home before you ever go look at it or a hotel room, maybe a business. The possibilities are endless.
We all have special photographs ranging from babies, birthdays, graduations, weddings and anniversaries just to name a few. In the United Kingdom alone the average wedding photographer charges £1,520 for a day of photographing.
